Why do multistage reciprocating compressors have different compression ratio for each stage?

The reason is usually that the designer is targeting the same maximum outlet temperature from each compression stage. As the pressure rises, the ratio of specific heats (Cp/Cv) is changing, causing a different temperature rise for a given pressure ratio.
