Following are the reasons
1. To reduce the partial pressure of hydrocarbon in flash zone
2. Strip out light hydrocarbons from long residue.

Stripping steam is put at the bottom of Crude distillation column for Reduced Crude Oil cut to avoid escape of lighters from crude distillation column .

The heater outlet temperature is the maximum obtained without experiencing cracking. The stripping steam below the flash zone, by decreasing the H.C. partial pressure, results in less bottoms product. Stripping steam at the side strippers improves the distillation between cuts.

It lowers the partial pressure of the hydrocarbon, causing additional hydrocarbon to vaporize. In the bottom of the column it reduces the amount of feed to the vacuum column. In the side strippers, the reduction in partial pressure strips out light ends to help make flash point and H2S specs.
